The story of
S.L. Rempel
There’s an old joke that makes its rounds every now and again… “been there, done that, have the t-shirt.” Well, at this point in my life journey, I have amassed quite the t-shirt collection. But I’m not done yet as this latest venture with writing my first book of fiction adds yet another t-shirt to my collection.
I currently live in Saskatchewan, Canada, with three fuzzy butt companions (two cats and one dog, all rescues) in a 1906 house that leans to the north – or so the inspector said when I bought it. We are all imperfect… me, my house, and my fuzzy butt companions are all imperfect – and in that imperfection is perfection, and is a reflection of how I have lived.
For most of my 40-year career I have worked in marketing and business development – creativity abounds which should fulfill my creative drive, right? Yes and no. Much of this time has been supporting highly technical science and engineering fields, the writing and problem solving I do for my day job is deployed differently than the writing to create Maia’s story.
Over the years I have taken side quests into product development, horse ownership, publishing, and toe dips into too many hobbies to list. I am game to try almost anything once – and many times did exactly that, tried it once and then walked away.
I have always dreamed of writing fiction. This has always been on the ’round to is list’, and even though I spoke of this dream often, it is not until Fall 2025 this dream came true!
How this story has haunted me
The story of Maia & The Dragon Mist has been a labor of love over 15 years, with the story line evolving many times over those years. And evolving even further once I began putting pen to paper (or keyboard to computer).
Finishing Maia’s story brought a surprising sense of sadness as if I was losing a long‑time friend but also joy and satisfaction with how the final story came together. It was truly a labor of love as I cried, laughed, and raged at many of life’s injustices as I embodied each character’s experiences in the moment.
Now you have a feel for the kind of person I am. Which brings us to today. Maia & The Dragon Mist is not my first foray into the world of publishing, but my first time writing fiction.
No matter what happens when this labor of love goes out into the world, know that I am very happy and grateful for the experience of creating and writing this story, and grateful to you for stopping by for a visit and perhaps, even taking a chance on this unknown author.
Live well dear reader!
