Dragon Families
Introduction
This page includes an overview of the seven dragon families from Mabon, and one dragon from their original planet of Ostara. All these characters in the table below are weaved into my book and each has significance in Maia’s story. There is another major character in Maia’s story who is not described below, as she is not a dragon. You will have to read the book to learn more of this other major character and meet all the dragon families and their representatives.
They are all characters in my book, this is true, but I also enjoyed meeting the ‘character’ that each embodied as they let themselves unfold and become known.

Aunia, Ice Dragon
Appearance: pearly white with amethyst eyes and amethyst highlights that extend along each side of the head, circle the ears and into a crown of upright scales that sit atop the head. These amethyst scales can extend down the spine to the tail, which unfolds into an amethyst fan of scales. As an Aunia dragon ages, the depth of amethyst color fades to a hint of color along the spine and tail but remains vibrant on the head.
Aunia dragons, of all the families, live longest yet breed the fewest. Because they are slow to reproduce, Aunia dragons are very rare.
Both have a special affection for all forms of fauna and flora, and their presence can make flowers bloom and trees grow to provide shade and shelter. They exude a kind and wise presence but are impacted by feeling the balance between fear and love in all those they encounter; they are very empathic to the moods of those around them.

- Known attributes: keen awareness and intelligence

Kairi, Water Dragon
Appearance: deep blue body with shimmering scales, fin-like spikes, and gills. Their eyes are of a liquid blue that gives the appearance of water ebbing and flowing. All dragons have wings, but Kairi dragons can use their wings for flight or transform their wings into fins for swimming.
Many dragons view Kairi dragons as dreamers with very active imaginations, interspersed with random moments of intuition. It is difficult to understand whether they are speaking from a sense of something intangible or are creating illusions. Kairi dragons move with a gliding grace and are highly intuitive, with an affinity for water. All water, whether it is rain that falls from the sky to earthly-bound bodies of water such as oceans, streams, lakes, and even puddles.
- Continent: Asia
- Symbol: Wave
- Tattoo location: left side of neck
- Known attributes: love of water and their innate intuition
- Focus: Artist
Anuri, Earth (Land) Dragon
Appearance: light green eyes and body with mossy spikes and scale tips that can be any vibrant contrasting color from yellow to pink. Their talons are translucent and often take on the color of their footing, whether this be soil, grass or even sand. Their mossy spikes often flow with the slightest breeze or movement, giving them a constant appearance of being in motion even when completely still.
Anuri dragons have a reputation for being everyone’s friend because they are very talkative and have a friendly nature, along with a tendency to always be dancing or moving in some form. They often say what they believe to be true, but their innocence and tendency to be easily misled make them naive.
- Continent: South America
- Symbol: Seed
- Tattoo location: below left eye
- Known attributes: seeking and speaking the truth
- Focus: Flora
Inti, Wood Dragon
Appearance: their bodies are brown in waves of light to dark brown depending on the individual dragon. They have vibrant gold eyes that have swirling brown waves that match their body, making others unsure whether their eyes are open. Inti has a deep love for all animals and is quietly thoughtful, preferring to observe from the shadows more than engage as an active participant. Not introverted although often assumed as such.
Besides their family symbol, the earth-hatched Inti has tattoos of an animal representing each of the four directions:
- North = Bear for elders and death.
- East = Eagle for birth and children.
- South = Wolf for youth.
- West = Buffalo for adults and parents.
- Continent: North America
- Symbol: Turtle
- Tattoo location: behind left ear
- Known attributes: spiritual connection to ancestral family and forgiveness
- Focus: Fauna
Auro, Rock Dragon
Appearance: black body with red eyes and red-tipped scales. Their claws, which are also red, give the appearance of dripping blood, even when no battle has been fought. Their scale color can change based on their mood. Forewarning others who are knowledgeable of this trait. Heart rate affects this color change. Skilled Auros can mask this color change by controlling their heart rate. Giving the appearance of being calm when in fact battle is imminent.
Auro dragons have a reputation for being aloof or cold due to their self-esteem and confidence, which can seem borderline arrogant. On Earth, Auro dragons have a special affection for humans, and can influence human behavior.
- Continent: Europe
- Symbol: Mountain
- Tattoo location: left chest
- Known attributes: desires, dreams, and hopes, but also confidence often interpreted as arrogance
- Focus: Humans
Cort, Coral Dragon
Appearance: warm or soft yellow body with white highlights on the very tips of the scales. Eyes are orange and often appear to hypnotize those that peer into them for too long.
Cort dragons possess a primal nature and have a heightened awareness of all their senses. Their physicality exudes sensuality and playfulness, with a natural magnetism that appeals to all who meet them.
As primal beings, they have a deep respect for the circle of life and celebrate both birth and death in its purest forms, working either to save a life or ease pain as death nears. They have an easy-going manner yet can be very passionate about any subject that interests them.
- Continent: Australia / Oceania
- Symbol: Infinity
- Tattoo location: over heart
- Known attributes: unlimited compassion and empathy, endless, without bound
- Focus: Life / Death
Rhizo, Fire Dragon
Appearance: deep blood red body with black-tipped scales and black claws. They have brown eyes that reflect their mood by appearing to be soft brown when being empathetic, to becoming almost black when angered. The Rhizo dragon is the largest and is distinctive for the large horn that curves from its nose, with some Rhizo having another smaller horn behind the main.
They have a commanding presence, exuding a sense of authority but also of safety. Even though they have an imposing presence, everyone feels safer in their presence. Rhizo dragons have a reputation for being stoic, but their eyes reveal genuine emotion, and they possess a deep sense of caring.
- Continent: Africa
- Symbol: Animal Horn
- Tattoo location: left forearm
- Known attributes: warrior strength, power, and dignity
- Focus: Fire, Justice
Madoc, Wisdom Dragon
Appearance: pale green body with gold-tipped scales, gold scales surrounding their eyes and mouth. Each Madoc dragon has a beard that flows from its lower chin, the color of which can vary from one family member to another. The beard length is a sign of age; the longer the beard, the older the dragon.
Madoc dragons, which are of similar size and life span to most other dragons, command respect for their psychic abilities and high intelligence, and they possess the ability to remember everything they have ever seen, heard, or learned. When they combine these memories with their other attributes, Madocs make excellent detectives; they can figure out how anything works or follow obscure information to find the truth.

- Symbol: Eye
- Tattoo location: center of forehead
